This (starts with photo image, then goes to underpainting, then to finished pastel painting) has been an experiment using an acrylic underpainting on Gatorboard with layers of tape blocking out certain areas after each acrylic color is applied. First I sketched in a rough design with a waterproof Sharpie pen, then started to add acrylic washes and blocked out areas with tape after each wash. Then I peeled off all the tape and applied pumice gel to the whole surface, then added local color and details with soft pastel. It was fun to do – sort of like batik.
