Here’s the second oil painting I did of the damage done by Hurricane Irene in August 2011, called “Gold Rush.” More to come – I’m enjoying working on this series. My hard drive on my computer imploded; otherwise, I’d have posted this sooner!

I’ve been working on a series of oil paintings recently based on photos I took in August of some of the coastal destruction and erosion of the Northeastern coast caused by Hurricane Irene. I find the shapes and general disorder of the uprooted trees to have a weird kind of excitement. This painting is the first one I’ve completed, called “Aftermath.” I have a second oil painting almost finished that’s of similar size and subject matter which I hope to post next week.

Last June I spent a wonderful day with friends in Montepulciano, and these hens were running around the courtyard of the Avignonesi vineyard where we had a fantastic outdoor lunch and wine-tasting – and this pastel is the result.

Closed for the Season

This is a small oil painting that’ll be on display at the Davis Park Artists Group Inaugural Exhibition at the Casino in Davis Park, Fire Island on Sunday, July 24th from 1 – 4 pm. I called it “Closed for the Season” since it depicts the Harbor Store in late fall.

Summer on River Road

Summer on River Road

Last week I painted outdoors up in Putnam County, NY with 2 painter friends. It was a hazy, hot summer day and we set up by a swampy river area outside Pawling. I did this in about 2 hours and will leave it as is since I like the plein air ‘freshness’ of it.

It’s currently on exhibit at the Salmagundi Club in New York as part of the Club’s “Summer Potpourri” exhibit.

Purple Haze

This is the final painting “Purple Haze” from the start I posted (two posts down, the one on the left). Although I started it with an oil wash, I decided to create a toothed surface by applying an acrylic ground coat when the oil layer was completely dry, and then finished it in hard and soft pastels.

Firecracker Sky – block-in

This is one of my favorite Florida scenes and I have painted it many times. This time around, I started the painting as a demo, using only hard black pastel in different forms (diluted with alcohol, sprayed on, washed on, etc.) on Wallis paper to create my block-in and basic drawing. Once it was completely dry I added the color in both soft and hard pastels.

Here are two painting starts using a light oil wash on oil-primed paper (left) and on gessoed masonite board (right). I decided to paint the one on the right in pastels, so then added a coat of acrylic ground and fine pumice to create a good tooth. Will post the finished product when I get it done-

Horse Path in North Salem, NY

In early May a group of painters and I spent the day plein air painting at a beautiful open space in North Salem. This oil is called “Horse Path in North Salem, NY.” It was a hot and hazy day, but the trees had just started to bud.
